Some of the most common pet varieties include the budgerigar (or budgie), the cockatiel, and the lovebird. Parrots can be very intelligent birds, capable of learning to talk and do tricks. Parrots are also important members of Australian ecosystems. Many species are seed predators, helping to spread plant seeds throughout forests and woodlands. They also play an important role in pollination; some parrot species pollinate more than one hundred different plant species! These large, colourful parrots are easily identified by their distinctive crest feathers, which stick up like a Mohawk hairstyle. They are popular as pets due to their friendly nature and intelligence. However, there are many other Australian parrot species that are less well known. The tawny frogmouth is a good example – this nocturnal bird is easily mistaken for a large owl when it is perched on a tree branch! All Australian parrots are protected under the Wildlife Conservation Act 1998, so it is illegal to hunt or keep them as pets without a permit.
